Sergeant Sean Renfro Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado

 

Sergeant Sean Renfro was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic at an accident scene on Highway 285, at Doubleheader Ranch Road, near Aspen Park at approximately 2:40 pm.

Sergeant Renfro, who was off-duty, had stopped to assist at the scene of a previous crash when his vehicle was also struck as the result of icy and snowy conditions. He remained on scene and was assisting Colorado State Patrol troopers by directing traffic as they worked the accident. The driver of an SUV approaching the scene lost control of his vehicle, crossed over the center line, and struck Sergeant Renfro, a bystander, and one of the vehicles involved in the second crash. A trooper was also injured by flying debris.

Sergeant Renfro had served with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office for 15 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

I just want to get the conversation started. Should the GoPro footage be released to the general public?

It is being reported that Dean Potter’s GoPro was recording at the time of this accident and that the helmet-mountain camera captured his last moments before the accident.

Yosemite National Park officials are using the footage to investigate the cause of the BASE jumping accident that resulted in the deaths of Potter and fellow wingsuiter Graham Hunt.

Potter’s GoPro footage and still photos taken by observers are creating a clearer picture of what went wrong during their flight. Footage shot by Potter’s girlfriend, Jenn Rapp, from Taft Point, a promontory 3,000 feet above the valley floor, where the jump was staged is also being reviewed.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – NATO will help Iraq reform and strengthen its security forces which are reeling from a near collapse a year ago in the face of an offensive by Islamic State fighters, NATO said on Friday.

Iraq asked NATO for help training its security forces in December after Islamic State captured large parts of the country.

The program will focus on seven priority areas including advice on reforming the security sector, cyber defense and military training, NATO said in a statement. Training will be held in Turkey and Jordan, meaning NATO will not need a new agreement with Iraq to base troops there.

NATO previously had a team training Iraqi security forces but it was withdrawn at the end of 2011 when no agreement could be reached on the legal status of NATO troops in the country.

A U.S.-led coalition has been conducting air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria but NATO as an organization has so far taken little part.

The agreement on the support package comes a few days after Turkey sought NATO endorsement for its campaign against militants in Syria and Iraq.

The NATO package will also help with the disposal of explosive devices, civil military planning, military medicine and medical assistance and civil emergency planning.

President Barack Obama in June ordered the deployment of 450 more U.S. troops to Iraq’s Sunni heartland to advise and assist Iraqi forces, expanding the 3,100-strong U.S. contingent.
